Pacific Islands Forum and the Global Population

Population statistics for the Pacific Islands Forum are some of the most varied that you will find in any international or supranational organization across the globe. As can be seen in table 2.1.1, the larger members of the Pacific Islands Forum, such as Australia account for over 60% of the population of the Pacific Islands Forum, whereas the small island state of Niue account for less than .005% of the total population. In global terms, the Pacific Islands Forum is one of the smaller international or supranational organizations. With its total population estimated at just over 40 million people (Our World in Data, 2016), the Pacific Islands Forum total population makes up just over 0.5% of the global population. This pales in comparison with other global organizations. For example, The European Union total population of 741 million makes up over 10% of the world’s total population (European Union, 2016). So comparatively speaking, the population of the PIF is not within the same population size as other global organisations.
